Conservatory

If you decide to take all 5 conservatory core classes you will receive a $385 credit to your accounts.

This intermediate course covers the history of photography, the anatomy of a camera, the foundational and technical aspects of photography (exposure, depth of field, lens focal length, etc.) and the basics of lighting and composition. Lessons learned will be applied practically by shooting assigned projects. The goal of this class is to develop the student’s confidence with their equipment and to artistically train their eye. Requirements: Digital camera with focus capability.

This course will cover the basics of musicianship, notation, ear training, written harmony and keyboard harmony. There will be written homework, ear training and keyboard practice. Students study music theory and composition and will be expected to compose and perform (or direct/organize a performance of) their original scores. Students will compose vocal and instrumental pieces.

This course will cover the basic compositional techniques of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and modern time periods with practice in composing in each style. The second half of the course will focus on the cultivation of the individual writing style, performing and critiquing pieces in order to grow as a composer. Out-of-class time averages 3 hours per week. Requirements: staff paper, pencil, access to CD player, piano and/or keyboard

This class will build on the acting skills developed during Intro to Theater & Acting II.?Students will be expected to perform and analyze several scripts throughout the school year. This class will focus on classical texts; specifically Shakespeare, but may introduce texts from the medieval time period through the Baroque. Students will be expected to show proficiency in memorization and body/vocal control before moving from this class on to Advanced Acting.?If proficiency is not demonstrated, students may repeat this class. Requirements: Plays will be assigned at the discretion of the teacher.?Students may also be asked to provide scripts or monologues of their choice. Students are required to participate in an arts festival.

With Film Class/Lab, each year should focus on honing in a particular skill: i.e. editing, storytelling, coloring, etc. Students will master this skill throughout the year, while still continuing to build their portfolio. Each year the media art teacher should specify what particular skill students will be mastering so parents see it is not the same class each time. This allows for no prerequisites needed for the core film classes AFTER a student has completed intro to media arts.

This course will cover the fine arts categories of drawing, painting and color theory, while incorporating an introduction to the elements and principles of design. Topics will include composition, perspective and drawing/painting techniques in a variety of media and styles.

An introductory level class designed specifically for Artios students who are interested in gaining a comprehensive level of the technical and creative aspects that drive creative filmmaking. With hands-on instruction, the students will learn how to shoot, light, and edit their own short digital film.

This class offers an overview of all aspects of technical theater and production management. It covers technical as well as production roles and responsibilities. The students will be introduced to types of technical theater equipment via photographs, websites, hands-on work and possible field trips. This class will have a lengthy segment on set design as well as an end-of the year project where students will chose a theater job and will produce a play with a team. (The play will not actually be produced; however the team must complete all the preparation, budgeting and research necessary to produce the show.) Requirements: All students wishing to work on crew must take this class. Students will need a large drawing pad, ruler, pencils, and paint clothes. Students may also be asked to bring tools as needed they will not be required to purchase any tools.

Students will learn God’s Word as the foundation to understanding the world around them. Reading, class discussion, scripture memorization and engaging lectures will help the students to better grasp the core doctrines of the Christian faith and better understand their own beliefs. Students will be expected to read the assigned material and to engage in the class conversation by asking questions and responding to other students and the instructor. This course seeks to help high school students better grasp and deepen their faith in Biblical truth in an era of pragmatism, false tolerance and a denial of absolutes. History of the time period being studied in the Academy rotation will be included in our research and discussions. Curriculum: Summit Ministries Understanding the Faith Series.

This course pursues more advanced topics of music theory.These topics include beginning composition. Students should expect weekly written assignments, as well as ear training and keyboard homework (total outof-class work is approximately 1 hour/week.). Requirements: Pencils and manuscript paper (also called staff paper, which can be downloaded and printed at www.freestaffpaper.cjb.net/ or purchased at a local music store.) Student must also have access to a CD player and a piano or keyboard for regular practice.

The class will be split into two semesters. During the fall semester, the students will focus on writing for the stage. The students will learn what a stage play is, the correct format of a stage play, and how to construct a story for stage. They will learn about several types of plays (modern, classic, absurdist, etc) and will learn the skills to develop characters, plots, and dialogue that will translate to stage. The final project of the fall semester will be to complete a short (10-15 minute) one-act play. The spring semester will focus on screenwriting. Students will learn what a screenplay is, how it differs from a stage play, the format of a screenplay, and how to construct a story for screen. They will also learn how to create characters, how to tell a story through a visual medium, and how to show creativity through a very structured format. The final project for the spring semester will be to complete the script for a short film (10-15 minutes). Homework: Approximately 1-2 hours a week. Requirements: All literary arts majors and media majors must take this class.

Academy

Price: $795.00

The Artios Academy of Arts and History teaches four core courses (history, theater, art, and music) within its weekly class days. All four courses integrate with each other through historical time-period. We teach these subjects in their entirety, which allows students not only to have knowledge of facts but also to have knowledge of the principles and purpose of the subject. All four subjects are taught in a hands-on, creative, and integrative way, all while being taught from a Biblical worldview.

Subjects are integrated and include: History, Language Arts, Music, Art, Theater, and Science. Class runs from 10:15am to 1:15pm. Our Artios SmartStart program is designed to provide students in preK/K with a developmentally-appropriate approach to academics, while focusing on the whole heart and unique individuality of each student. Students will be immersed in our historical time period; for the 2019-2020 school year we will be exploring the Modern time period. Weekly integrated assignments will be provided for parents as a springboard for their learning at home.

Preparatory

 Using the Teaching Textbook curriculum, combined with a personalized approach to math progress, suggested real-life activities and projects, and individualized tutoring, students will complete all necessary requirements for Geometry as prescribed by the local standards. We use Geometry: A Teaching Textbook First Edition which has accompanying DVDs for the students. Topics covered include Lines and Angles, Parallel Lines, Triangles, Congruent Triangles, Similar Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Polygons, Circles, Area, and Solid Geometry. Students are expected to do approximately 4 lessons per week; a test about every two weeks; a mid-term; and final in class. The DVDs have EVERY problem worked out in detail, so if a particular problem isn’t solved during class, the student still can see exactly how to solve it. Requirements: Teaching Textbook

 Using the Teaching Textbook curriculum combined with a personalized approach to math progress, suggested real life activities and projects, and individualized tutoring, students will complete all necessary requirements for Algebra I as prescribed by the local standards. This class covers fractions, decimals, exponents, and roots. Students learn to apply algebraic problem solving techniques to a variety of equations. Basic coordinate graphing is introduced.

Teaching Textbooks – This class covers advanced equations involving fractions, exponents, roots and polynomials. Students also learn graphing lines, parabolas and conic.

We will be using Exploring Creation with Physics by Apologia. This is a college-prep physics course and is designed for the student who has completed Algebra 1 and Geometry and has had an introduction to the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent. It provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general physics, heavily emphasizing vector analysis. This class has a minimum enrollment requirement.

Biology is one of the most exciting topics of study. In this class students will get to see the detail and magnitude of God’s creation. From the microscopic to the macroscopic, all of creation sings His name. Some specific topics covered in this class include: the study of life (including DNA), each kingdom in biological classification, the cell, cellular reproduction, Mendelian Genetics, and ecology. Dissection will also be an important part of this class. Students will keep a lab notebook.

This course will be covering topics such as atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the Earth and the lithosphere, weather, Newton’s Laws of Motion, sound, light and forces in creation. Students will maintain a lab notebook documenting the labs performed throughout the course.

Students learn literary analysis through studying common elements (context, structure, and style) and literary elements (conflict, plot, setting, characters, and theme) as they read and discuss the selected literature for the time period (or influenced by that period). Vocabulary: Development of an extensive vocabulary is important. The required literary works at times contain resplendent word usage for our study and future use. We will revel in the wonderful language that is presented in our literary choices. In addition to reading and discussing, students may be asked to participate in class projects and presentations. Requirements: Textbook: Artios Home Companion Series and selected books (see Course Syllabus).

Integrating beautifully with the Academy program studying the ancient time period, this course leads students to enjoy reading stories and historical literature. Through the use of literature, the class will be introduced to basic literary elements and investigate grammar and its influence on composition. Students will enjoy learning how to write in the following genres: descriptive, narrative, expository and persuasive. Students will also be led through the process of writing essays. Through the use of games and each student’s writing, students will continue in their understanding of grammar and its uses.

Foundations in Personal Finance: High School Edition is a 12 chapter course. Each of the 12 chapters cover important money topics that build financial confidence and inspire hope in your students’ lives.

Plus

Make beautiful music together in the Artios MS/HS Ensemble. Students learn and practice the basics of music theory while learning and performing a wide variety of musical styles from hymns and spirituals to Broadway tunes and choral standards. A wide variety of repertoire will be performed with emphasis on time period music. The BJU Fine Arts Festival in the fall also provides an opportunity for the high school student to compete at the national level. This ensemble will consist of those able to sight-read, as well as students eager to learn. The ensemble will compete at the director’s discretion. Ensemble membership is required of Artios Conservatory Music Majors. Requirements: Ensemble members who perform will need a black shirt or blouse, black pants or skirt, and black shoes for performances. Students who are required to compete at an arts festival and/or competition may be required to purchase a choir gown/tuxedo/suit.

Students will explore a wide variety of art techniques and mediums while studying with our excellent art instructors in Art Club. Age Range: Elementary-Middle-school

This class will have a base in musical theater dance and may include jazz, modern, and Broadway! There will be an emphasis on performing, character, facial expressions, ensemble dance, and audition prep. Students will perform for an event in the spring. This class is designed for upper elementary through middle school students.

Stage Movement/Dance Technique Class. This class allows 5th -12th grade students additional class time to practice and perfect their dance form and line. Customized to meet the needs, interests, and goals of individual students. Emphasis is placed on developing strong fundamentals and technique as well as improving performance and artistry. This class will help students who feel dance is a weak link for them and allow them to improve their craft and confidence. Ballet is a fundamental technique to all dance and will be taught throughout this course, along with other dance styles: Jazz, Musical Theatre, and Modern. This class will prep students for dance auditions and help them know what to expect and tricks to learning choreography quickly. This class will perform dance numbers in both the Christmas Show and the Showcase performances.

This is an introductory class that will cover the basics of ballet as well as jazz and modern dance. Emphasis will be given on terminology and dance steps. Requirements: Jazz shoes, leotard and tights with skirt or shorts for girls, t-shirt and sweat pants for guys

Customized to meet the needs, interests, and goals of individual students. Emphasis is placed on developing strong fundamentals and technique as well as improving performance and artistry. This class will help students who feel dance is a weak link for them and allow them to improve their craft and confidence. Ballet is a fundamental technique to all dance and will be taught throughout this course, along with other dance styles: Jazz, Musical Theatre, and Modern. This class will prep students for dance auditions and help them know what to expect and tricks to learning choreography quickly. This class will perform dance numbers in both the Christmas Show and the Showcase performances.

Students learn and develop confidence and effective communication skills and discover their inner actor through being a part of our excellent Drama Club! Students are reminded and given the opportunity to give their best to the glory of God and not themselves. Multiple opportunities for performing in both competition and stage arenas. Requirements: Parent participation in one of our Drama Club Parent Committees is required. Production Fee: $125/per show. This covers costumes, t-shirt, and other miscellaneous costs that families would normally incur with a child in a production. Age range: 2nd grade – 12th grade
